Jeff Tipping has been on a unique journey since he was born in Liverpool, England in the fading days of the British Empire.
The 1960’s and 1970’s were experimental years for many people but his British Grammar School education encouraged him to develop traditional interests and the belief that a quality life is one of many colorful avenues. Jeff’s early loves included history, geography and the arts and when it came to sport he fell in love with soccer and golf.
This is not entirely surprising as the northwest of England has some of the finest soccer clubs in the world and is also home to three British Open Championship golf courses. To get the most out of the sporting life Jeff has long believed that a young man or woman should play a team sport and an individual sport. Jeff spent most of his days in his schoolboy years playing both sports on the flat, open landscape of western Lancashire.
When America called in 1974 Jeff’s desire to see different parts of the world began to take shape and he enrolled at Hartwick College, a small school in upstate New York with a phenomenal tradition in soccer. A four year starter, he helped Hartwick to the NCAA Division One National Championship in 1977 and, upon graduation, was drafted into the American Soccer League by the New York Eagles.
Traded to the Pennsylvania Stoners, Jeff captained the team to the ASL National Championship. During his four years with the club he earned All Star pro status three times. Injuries cut short his playing career but this opened the door to a career in coaching. Jeff served four successful years at his alma mater reaching two NCAA Final Fours and sixteen years as Head Coach at Muhlenberg College. During his time at Muhlenberg he coached the soccer and golf teams to eight NCAA soccer tournaments and one NCAA golf tournament. In 1998 he was asked to be a Technical Advisor to the US Women’s National Team.
In 1983 he became a staff coach for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Coaching Academy and he served as the part time NSCAA Director of Coaching in 1996, a position which he occupied with distinction full time from 2002 until January 2011. Jeff developed a national and international reputation as one of the finest coach educators in the world, a period marked with great success and the elevation of the NSCAA to a global leader in coaching education. In 2011 he left the NSCAA to develop his own company Jeff Tipping Enterprises, a truly trans - atlantic endeavor.
